When women are diagnosed with uterine fibroid, they often become terrified because there are many misinformations out there about fibroid. In fact, fibroid is a benign tumor and about 50% of women having fibroid, but most fibroids are asymptomatic and harmless. - Fibroid is a cancer
Fact: fibroid is a benign tumor and rarely transforms into cancerous lesion.
- If you have a fibroid, this means you will undergo hysterectomy
Fact: initial management of fibroid involves medical treatment (mainly hormonal) with high success rate. Surgical intervention (hysterectomy) is used only in resistant cases and old women who completed their family.
- Fibroid will cause infertility
Fact: fibroid rarely interfere with women's fertility; medical studies showed that 50% of women have fibroids which is used to be asymptomatic and has no effect on fertility. Even if fibroid is removed surgically, the uterus could be maintained intact for pregnancy.
- Having urgency of urination and constipation means having fibroid
Fact: having chest pain doesn't always mean having a heart attack; it's the same with fibroid. Fibroid is usually manifested with urgency and constipation, but urgency could be for example a sign for diabetes and constipation could be a sign for GIT problem. Anyway fibroid is diagnosed mainly by ultrasound or MRI.
