Third successful surgery for liver transplant from a live donor



The success series of SGH-Jeddah continued where the Unit of pancreatic surgery, bile ducts and liver transplantation conducted the third successful surgery for liver transplant from a live donor, it’s the first time in the western region of Saudi Arabia and the private medical sector, where a highly specialized medical team headed by prof. Amr AbdElaal, head of the liver transplant unit in the hospital performed liver transplant surgery for an Egyptian patient aged 58 years, after her 31 years old son donated her to The right lobe of the liver, she suffered many years from hepatic failure with abdominal ascites and abdominal infections.
The patient and the donor are equipped for surgery through a complex series of laboratory tests and radiations needed. The surgery lasted for about 12 hours where the entire infected liver was removed, the right lobe of the donor was implanted and the arterial, venous, and bile ducts were thoroughly connected, where this surgery is one of the most complicated surgeries.The patient and donor were transferred to the intensive care for 5 days for the patient and 3 days for the donor, then they transferred to one of the regular patients rooms specially equipped for them, until they recovered and left the hospital in good health.This achievement reflects the vision of Saudi German Hospital group to serve the community & afford high quality medical service according to the guidance of King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz on the provision of such services to the citizens & residents.
