Son donates his father 60% of his liver to save his life in SGH-Jeddah

SGH - Jeddah witnessed a special case, in which the highest human meanings were intertwined with the scientific development in the medical field, where the Liver Transplant Unit in Jeddah performed the fourth successful surgery to transplant a liver from a live donor, as a continuation of the hospital's exclusivity to perform this type of operations in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia and the private medical sector,   a 52-year-old patient after his 21-year-old son donated him the right lobe of his liver after the patient suffered a failure in liver function and ascites of the abdomen with frequent bronchitis attacks. This surgery is one of the most complicated surgeries because of the arrangements that precede it and then during the surgery. Three days after the surgery, the donor left the intensive care room and on the fifth day the patient was transferred from the intensive care unit to the regular follow-up room at the hospital. It was a coincidence that the donor had already donated to his sister part of his spinal cord after she was suffering from spinal cord disease and he continued his courage and sacrifices by giving his father more than half of his liver to save him from liver failure disease. Dr. Makarem Sobhi Batterjee, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SGH, said that SGH- Jeddah is the only one in the Western Region and the private sector that has the qualifications and capabilities to perform this type of complex operation, which requires approval by the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation in accordance with strict conditions for all steps of this type of operation.
